Growing ƒractally
Part 1 (DRAFT)
By Dan Singjoy
Introduction
This draft article was written in mid-2022, about two months after the formation of Genesis Fractal. It aims to provide an overview of various innovations and experiences in the Genesis Fractal community. Please note that this article is an early work in progress and only includes a small fraction of all of the benefits of the Genesis Fractal. You can learn more about the Genesis Fractal at EdenCreators.com/genesisfractal. Thanks for reading. Enjoy! :)

Progress So Far
There have been so many improvements over the last 2 months!
The group has been meeting with a consistent rhythm, but we’ve been making iterations and improvements every week. ƒractally has provided such a wonderfully exciting experience so far and I could describe in detail in many ways, but I will provide some high level overviews here for you:
Evolving Consensus Process
The consensus process is evolving to create a more helpful cooperating system for all.
For example:
- We’ve mostly starting using a ‘Process of elimination’ kind of consensus algorithm where we all come to consensus to choose rank 6 first, then rank 5, then rank 4, etc…
- More details in ƒractally presentation 2 (page 27)
- Video from ƒractally meeting #1 (22:26)
- More details in video after ƒractally meeting #1 (timestamp)
- We’re learning that the process works very well with a relatively small group of people doing only one round per week
- We don’t necessarily need successive rounds where the top 6 from each room meet. The process works well with just 1 round every week.
- This single round structure is quicker and may provide a fairer distribution of Respect in some situations.
- Dan Larimer spoke about this here (8:43)
- In meeting 8, Dan Larimer suggested a process where rank 6 nominates rank 5, rank 5 nominates rank 4, and so forth.
- fractally meeting 8
- Discussion after fractally meeting 8
- (timestamps)
- Fractally team decided that fractal rounds per event should be capped at 3 rather than 5
- This shortens the amount of time necessary and evens the distribution of respect
- Dan Larimer described this on… the fireside chat & Helios interview?
- There have been many logistical improvements, such as:
- formalizing the process in the genesis fractal contributor agreement
- using hive accounts for simplicity
- Joshua leading introductory meetings & making introductory videos
- organization on the gofractally site
- accounting improvements from Joshua & Gregory, etc…
- The fractally team have shared many exciting details about works in progress on the application during the meetings
- For example, in our ninth ƒractally meeting Mike Manfredi spoke about working on business use cases and independent alternative to zoom, and Thomas Halgren spoke about huge design library for UI…
Friendship and community building
It’s so great getting to know everyone!
Meeting and getting to know so many amazing people in community
- I’ve gotten to know people in the EOS Community way more than ever before by meeting in these random groups every week
- Plus the discussions afterwards and other related events like Fractally on eos meetings
- This aspect of fun, social meetings, shared experiences, friendships, networking, etc… explore, curate, and write about this more…
- We’ve laughed a lot. Especially in some of the more recent meetings where people are more likely to know each other well
- For example: Our ƒractally meeting in week 8 was hilarious, looking forward to sharing with everyone soon...
- After most recent meetings for the past month, we’ve been doing open mic style discussions with light moderation
- Some of these discussions have lasted for several hours with between 6-12 participants sharing exciting discussions
- So many great developments here…
- We’re considering doing twitter spaces after fractally meetings
- I’m planning to start a talkshow with fractally participants & creators . I’m very excited about it, and this kind of thing becomes so much easier with the ability to meet many people in the natural environment of ƒractally + discussions after meetings
- This point can be much further explored and is under appreciated - fractally and Eden provide environment for ‘social sparks’, fertile ground for interpersonal growth....
Cultural/Communal learning
- Learning how to cooperate more gracefully as community with fractally process
- Learning how to understand the fractally process better
- ƒractally process is like an imperfect scientific measurement machine that gets more precise with each measurement
- Dan Larimer made excellent points about this (in meetings 5-8?)
- Our community is internalizing helpful understandings to cooperate as best as possible with ƒractally. Such as:
- No ranking in a single meeting is fair. It is bound to be unfair...
- Contextualizing rankings
- Experiences with Hernan, Andrew, Nuno, many more members etc…
- Mike Manfredi message about competition etymology, Lex Fridman tweet, many more ideas about learning to cooperate gracefully as a community.
- So many interesting stories and communal learnings that are helpful to share as we each grow and become better communicators, coordinators, and cooperators…
- As More Equal Animals states…. A community can only succeed if the people have the right culture. No governance process can save a community with bad culture.
- Complementary to improvements to the consensus process, there is also the vital process of the community learning how to cooperate together…
- learning social skills and discovering the right memes, things to say …
- learning how to emotionally and socially cooperate in this new framework…
- to help everyone enjoy the process and benefit together...
- Much more to share here…
