The Eden community is considering changing the time of weekly meetings to better accommodate participants in American and European timezones, especially due to daylight savings adjustments. Proposals include moving the start time to 14, 15, or 16 UTC, with community discussions and polls indicating a preference for later times. The Eden+Fractal council has already approved a proposal to change the time, aiming to enhance participation and avoid conflicts with other meetings.

Proposals to Change The Time
I made the following three polls/proposals to ask community members what time they prefer. Please vote on Consortium, share your thoughts on Discord or Telegram, and discuss this during your breakout room if you have time. Of course, feel free to also share a different proposal if you prefer a different time or day.

Why Should We Change The Time?
Summary of Reasons
Here are five reasons why it’s a good idea to change the start time of the breakout rooms:
- Since we’ve adopted the Eden+Fractal process, breakout rooms are now 55 minutes and are scheduled to end at 14:10 UTC. This timing can make it difficult for people to schedule and it would be easier for people to schedule if the breakout room ends before the top of the hour.
- With the change in daylight savings time, the clocks are setting back an hour for most people. For example, if the local time of your meeting was previously meeting
- The current time is not optimized for American or European timezones, but this is where most participants are living. For example, with the current time and the change for daylight savings, people living in the Western USA or Canada would need to join at 5am, which is too early for many people.
- We may be able to attract and accommodate more great builders in the EOS community by switching to a different time that doesn’t conflict with other meetings, such as the EOS Leap Weekly Meeting.
- There is consensus in the community that scheduling the event at a later time is a great idea, as you can see in the previous proposal and discussion about changing the time. During Eden Fractal Meeting 22, the democratically elected Eden+Fractal council approved a proposal to change the time with supermajority consensus.
The following sections explore each of these reasons in more detail.
The Eden+Fractal Council Decides to Change the Time
During Eden Fractal Meeting 22, the democratically elected Eden+Fractal council approved a proposal to change the time with supermajority consensus. You can navigate the timestamps in the video description to see when and how the Eden+Fractal council made this decision.
Dan Singjoy spoke about the first time that the community reached consensus and approved the first proposal to change the meeting time with the Eden+Fractal process during the EOS Fireside chat on 11/2/2022 (01:29:35).
During meeting 23, the Eden+Fractal council approved a passed the second proposal!
The Eden+Fractal council approved a proposal to change the start time of breakout rooms to 16 UTC. You can navigate the timestamps in the video description to see when and how the Eden+Fractal council made this decision. 1:25:33
Patrick announced the new time and shared a great overview of our recent progress during the next EOS Fireside Chat. He shared an inspiring speech, encouraged Stephane to join, and reminded everyone about the Eden Fractal Brainstorming Sessions. You can hear Patrick, Stephane, and Dan speak about this here:
Previous Proposal
In mid-October I created a proposal to change the start time for breakout rooms. Approximately 25% of EDEN respect tokens votes in this proposal and 83% of tokens voted in favor of changing the time. You can see this proposal below:
Should we change the start time for breakout rooms?
Note: This proposal is now obsolete as the proposed date has already passed, so I made the new polls above.
Previous Discussion about Changing the Time
During Eden Fractal Meeting 21, the group discussed changing the time to 14 UTC or 15 UTC. There were ten participants at this time and IIRC seven people agreed to move back the start time. Nobody disagreed. Though the proposal originally suggested 14 UTC, several people said that they would prefer 15 UTC. Most people agreed that 15 UTC would be better than 14 UTC. You can see this conversation at 2:06:09 in the following video:
Accommodating American and European Timezones
During the above conversation and a follow-up conversation during this week’s Eden Town Hall, I learned a few additional reasons why pushing back the time to 15 UTC or later seems best.
- With the change in daylight savings time, the clocks are setting back an hour for most people.
- It seems that later in the morning is better for most participants in America and later in the afternoon is better for most participants in Europe.
- Several people in American timezones that have said that the current time is too early, especially for people in Western America.
- Patrick (and I think a couple other people) have said that it would be much better for people in Europe to schedule later meetings so they do not occur in the middle of the afternoon.
- The majority of Eden ƒractal participants are living in American or European timezones. You can see the chart below for more details about timing in Europe and America:

Accommodating Daylight Savings Time
- Once daylight savings time is in effect, the current time of 13:15 UTC would mean that people in Western America would start at 5:15am and people in Eastern America would start at 8:15am. The current time of 13:15 UTC would mean that people in Western Europe would start at 1:15pm and people in Eastern Europe would start at 3:15pm.
- If we changed the start time of breakout rooms to 14 UTC, then people in Western America would start at 6am and people in Eastern America would start at 9am. People in Western Europe would start at 2pm and people in Eastern Europe would start at 4pm.
- If we changed the start time of breakout rooms to 15 UTC, then people in Western America would start at 7am and people in Eastern America would start at 10am. People in Western Europe would start at 3pm and people in Eastern Europe would start at 5pm.
- If we changed the start time of breakout rooms to 16 UTC, then people in Western America would start at 8am and people in Eastern America would start at 11am. People in Western Europe would start at 4pm and people in Eastern Europe would start at 6pm.
- Given this information, it seems best to change the start time of breakout rooms to 15 or 16 UTC.
Accommodating Leap Meeting Participants
I recently spoke with Lisa Chandler and she suggested moving the time an hour back because Eden Fractal currently is at the same time at the Weekly Leap Meetings. There are about a dozen great EOS builders who participate in this meeting every week.
You can watch their videos and read their meeting summaries in the links below. I think that their meetings are often over by 14 UTC, so moving the meetings to this time may be a great way to enable the participants in this meeting to join Eden Fractal events right after their meeting about Leap. It is also possible that they are changing their meeting time due to daylight savings, but I’m not sure…

Community Responses
We’ll try to curate responses in Discord or Telegram regarding timing below. Below is one response so far.
Dan Singjoy: Personally I’m happy to whichever time and adjust my schedule to whatever works best for the community. If the community is happy either way then I’d prefer to start at 15 UTC or 16 UTC. In either case I plan to start the zoom call about 30 minutes early before each breakout room. I’d also be happy to be more punctual about this and/or start it earlier if community members would like.
Remember, you can also see many more responses about the timing in the video and proposals above. Thanks for reading!
