Community Stories put a spotlight on communities to help them thrive. The structure, problems, and development of communities are some key topics that are shared in stories to improve current and future communities.
Highlights
Intro
The Community Stories podcast hosted by Rosmari at 0:06 introduced an open conversation about communities, aiming to inspire engagement on this topic. She welcomed the first guest Dan Singjoy, founder of Eden Fractal and Eden Creators, who has participated in the Eden community for over two years and is also a musician.
Communities
Dan shared perspectives on communities formed throughout his life. He recalled positive childhood experiences with friends brought together by school, despite some mandatory activities. When asked at 5:49 how he would describe a community to an alien, Dan emphasized the importance of stories, games and tools to provide structure and empower cooperation. He compared community members to parts of an organism working in harmony, like cells in a body.
Dan highlighted metaphors from the book More Equal Animals at 10:11, explaining how teams can create public goods empowering the broader community. For example, he and Rosmari collaborating on a video could inspire many more people to create public goods. In college at 1:07:05, Dan gained more freedom to explore interests like music and entrepreneurship while meeting new people. However, after graduation at 1:08:17, he noticed a gap in finding a community to pursue music and business ideas with which made him search for answers. At 44:44, he expresses thoughts on what is on the surface of a community and what stays hidden, and ways to inspire people want to deep dive in a community explored at 54:10. 🌊
Challenges
The conversation explored major challenges that communities and their members currently face. Dan observed at 13:39 a wide range in community experiences - some doing amazing cooperative things, while others lack basics. He believes all communities at 36:00 lack sufficient tools, games and education to fully cooperate and prepare for the future. However, Dan sees opportunities for games and participatory structures to incentivize cooperation, like those created in Eden Fractal. He expressed at 1:12:21 a desire for more localized, communal experiences of music, dancing and celebrating together daily. 🕺
Games
The structures and games are widely discussed starting at 24:00, exploring Eden communities and Eden Fractal meetings at 30:00. Dan noted how relationships and experiences form the hidden depth over time that fosters collaborations. He explained how games help formalize rules and structure participation. For newcomers, there is limited visible surface information so a welcome approach and guide as a resource is essential. Dan and Rosmari see potential for new technologies at 1:19:03 to continue evolving communities with increased transparency, participation and expression. Their conversation highlighted insights into community challenges and inspiration for empowering cooperative communities. ⚽️
Public Goods
When describing communities at 10:11, Dan talks about the concept of "one plus one equals three" from the book More Equal Animals by Dan Larimer. He explains how a team can be more powerful than the sum of its members, creating benefits beyond what individuals can achieve alone. As community members cooperate, they can create public goods that empower and inspire the broader community. For example, he discusses how he and Rosmari collaborating on a video could inspire many people, more than their individual efforts alone. Communities allow members to invest their unique talents and energy like "batteries" to generate public goods for the common benefit of all. 🌱
