We recommend community members to review the code of conduct that @gavriel proposed in the private Eden Community telegram chat for members of EdenOnEOS. I don’t agree with all aspects of this code of conduct, but it has many helpful pieces that can help us form our individual and communal code of conduct. Codes of conduct can make us more efficient and effective at providing better experiences for all.
A code of conduct can help communities cooperate by establishing guidelines for behavior and interaction within the community. This can help prevent misunderstandings and conflicts by setting clear expectations for how members should behave. It can also promote a culture of respect and foster a more helpful environment for all members. Additionally, a code of conduct can provide a framework for addressing and resolving conflicts when they do arise, helping to ensure that disputes are handled fairly and efficiently.
From Gavriel’s proposed code of conduct, here are few aspects that I find particularly helpful:
Contributor Covenant, the first and most popular code of conduct for open source communities. It's been adopted by over 40,000 projects including Linux, Golang, JRuby, Swift, F#, Rails, and the open source portfolios of organizations including Apple, Microsoft, Google, Salesforce, and Intel.

Our Standards
Examples of behavior that contributes to a positive environment for our community include:
- Demonstrating empathy and kindness toward other people
- Being respectful of differing opinions, viewpoints, and experiences
- Giving and gracefully accepting constructive feedback
- Accepting responsibility and apologizing to those affected by our mistakes, and learning from the experience
- Focusing on what is best not just for us as individuals, but for the overall community

Implementation Plan for Code of Conduct
I think the most effective way to think about code of conduct is as follows
Individual Codes
Each community member can write code of conduct and/or review the code of conducts of others. Each person makes their own mind about what code of conduct is acceptable to them. Of course we already always do this naturally, but I recommend expressing it in writing to crystalize the code of conduct, remember it all precisely in the future, refine and modify it over time, and help educate others. I recommend using a tool like Notion or Github to enable others to easily copy or duplicate and enable a large degree of customization and thought writing editing features. I encourage everyone to take some time to think about this (at some point, soon?). As Jordan Peterson said, any responsibility abdicated will be taken by a tyrant (timestamp joe rogan, add to jordan page)
Remembering the freedom to opt out and respecting (rights of) community members
as we discussed in consensus article, tadas interview, etc….
We should remember that each community member is free to use their own code of conduct to guide their actions, and right to secede and opt out. For example, if the owner of a tool or website or social media account wants to opt out at any time, then they can - its not community property entitled and everyone should respect the choice of others in the community
Community Codes
As we gain more capacity for expressing community opinions and making group decisions, we can gradually craft a community code of conduct expressed with democratic process. This can help grow consensus about how we act, efficiency gains, clarity for all participants and new members
We should still remember freedom of individuals to opt out and respect people’s choice and personal property. Remember that any code of conduct approved by delegates is an expression of the consensus opinion of community, not in any way binding individual community members.
To begin, i will start by proposing this as
Enforcement Responsibilities
Community leaders have the right and responsibility to remove, edit, or reject comments, commits, code, wiki edits, issues, and other contributions that are not aligned to this Code of Conduct, and will communicate reasons for moderation decisions when appropriate.
Is enforcement the right word? Is there a better word? there should be…
Enforcement Guidelines
Community leaders will follow these Community Impact Guidelines in determining the consequences for any action they deem in violation of this Code of Conduct:
1. Correction
Community Impact: Use of inappropriate language or other behavior deemed unprofessional or unwelcome in the community.
Consequence: A private, written warning from community leaders, providing clarity around the nature of the violation and an explanation of why the behavior was inappropriate. A public apology may be requested.
2. Warning
Community Impact: A violation through a single incident or series of actions.
Consequence: A warning with consequences for continued behavior. No interaction with the people involved, including unsolicited interaction with those enforcing the Code of Conduct, for a specified period of time. This includes avoiding interactions in community spaces as well as external channels like social media. Violating these terms may lead to a temporary or permanent ban.
3. Temporary Ban
Community Impact: A serious violation of community standards, including sustained inappropriate behavior.
Consequence: A temporary ban from any sort of interaction or public communication with the community for a specified period of time. No public or private interaction with the people involved, including unsolicited interaction with those enforcing the Code of Conduct, is allowed during this period. Violating these terms may lead to a permanent ban.
4. Permanent Ban
Community Impact: Demonstrating a pattern of violation of community standards, including sustained inappropriate behavior, harassment of an individual, or aggression toward or disparagement of classes of individuals.
Consequence: A permanent ban from any sort of public interaction within the community.
Dispute Resolution System
I recommend community members to explore the concepts of dispute resolution systems being pioneered by the EdenOnEOS community. Dan Larimer wrote an insightful article with a new form of dispute resolution
Eden on EOS bylaws. Podcasts about this? Eden CD meeting? Maybe ask Chris if he knows of any video or audio content that explains the bylaws. I know a couple helios twitter spaces featured this topic, for example.
There are also other examples of dispute resolution systems that may be worth exploring, such as Kleros
Below are select insights regarding . If you search the PDF for the word ‘dispute’ then you can find more related thoughts.
